Living in harmony with nature
by Alan “Blue Sage” Childers
I have always felt an affinity to nature. I can remember as a child going into the woods to commune with the surroundings connecting with the trees and animals that were there. That was something that followed me into adult life. I prefer to be outside, feeling the wind against my skin and raw power of a storm.
I am also interested in the ideologies of the Far East. The ideas behind Zen Buddhism and Taoism have always been of particular interest to me. The balance between light and dark, honor, and living in harmony within your society and surroundings, have been values I have kept with me. I have always had a belief system that consisted mostly of Asian ideals of honor and Native American beliefs in nature. Neither as a whole seemed to fit just right for what I believed, but each had parts that did.
When I came across a book on Wicca I was immediately attracted to the nature aspect that I value and the code of honor that I try to live by. It seemed to be a combination of the basic ideals that I hold. The one thing that I disagreed with was the amount of “tools” used and the seeming need for elaborate ceremonies with long speeches invoking everything under the sun. I only need minimal items to focus my thoughts and direct energy.
I believe that thoughts have power, as well as action with intent. To achieve success requires not only the desire and thought to be great, but also the actions necessary to achieve the goals required to get there. Envisioning the goal desired as well as seeking out the best possible path to achieve that goal. Once determined, putting into practice the steps necessary to make that goal a reality.
By using the forces within our self and the forces of nature that surround us, it is possible to achieve anything. At the core of my beliefs is, by living in harmony with my sur-roundings and myself, I will be able to have a productive life and move forward in my learning. My beliefs lead me to seek a balance in all aspects of my life. By balancing the different aspects of body and spirit, I will achieve the goals I have set for myself. I believe we must live with nature, to learn the lessons it teaches and apply them to our daily life.
